They are located in Santa Marina di Salina and can be reached after a trekking route of about 10 km with a vertical drop of 500m. Challenging, but which offers wonderful scenery and views of the Aeolian archipelago. The caves, dug out of tuff, are located in the “Serro dell’acqua” area and were used as a rock settlement where the inhabitants of Santa Marina took refuge during raids of pirates, this explains the many rooms communicating with each other.
An alternative way to discover the island of Salina is certainly to go around it by boat and we advise you to take this excursion with Sunrise Boat Aeolian.
Through these excursions you will be able to appreciate glimpses that are difficult to admire from the coast, such as the crags, shaped by the wind and the sea.
Wandering around Isola you will surely notice the many terraces, which branch off from its hills to the sea. Perhaps it is precisely this wonderful environment, endowed with sun, favorable light, volcanic nature of the land, wind and sea breeze that have allowed its production over the decades of unique wines.
If during your stay you plan to pay a visit to a cellar with an adjoining tasting you will be spoiled for choice!
Among the best known wineries we recommend: the @cantinecolosi , with around 40 years of experience in the sector, @hauner_winery born from the creative curiosity of its creator Carlo Hauner, @fenechmalvasiadellelipari reference for Malvasia, @cantinedamicosalina and @caravagliovini , both specialized in organic wines. Noteworthy is the ancient @tascadalmerita famous for the wide selection of excellent wines and for 100% Malvasia and the @aziendaagricolavirgonasalina which, in addition to wines, produces the only sparkling wine with Malvasia grapes: the Ruffiano.
During your visit to Salina you cannot fail to go to Pollara, a place known to all for the famous film Il Postino by Massimo Troisi. Pollara is also exciting because its landscape is made up of ancient boat storage, from the faraglione in the center of the bay and from 𝑷𝒖𝒏𝒕𝒂 𝑷𝒆𝒓𝒄𝒊𝒂𝒕𝒐, a truly scenic natural arch. Do not miss the Sunset accompanied by an excellent cocktail or a glass of wine.
Called the “Green Pearl“, Salina is the island that best lends itself to walking, hiking and trekking. Monte Fossa delle Felci, an ancient volcano that has been extinct for centuries, is the highest peak of the Aeolian Islands. It represents an ideal place for trekking and nature lovers.. It is also a nature reserve, testifying to how its luxuriant vegetation is a resource to be protected.
To make the excursion to the Mount, the starting points are different, but Valdichiesa is the one most commonly considered. After about 3 hours of climbing, even steep at times, you will almost forget the effort made, because you will find yourself in front of an extraordinary panorama of the other six islands, and on the horizon you will even see Etna.
It opened in 1999, in the nineteenth-century Palazzo Marchetti with the aim of narrating the migratory phenomenon of the islanders, after the phylloxera disaster towards new destinations such as Australia, the United States, Canada and Argentina. The museum collection is represented by the testimonies of the time: tickets, passports, photographs, original documents, old suitcases and unpublished films. The visit constitutes a beautiful journey through the history of the Aeolian people in the world, also raising awareness of the concept of emigration.
Another unique place in Salina is the Punta Scario Beach, in the municipality of Malfa.
Easily reachable through a path carved into the rock, this little corner of paradise appears after a few minutes’ walk, with a crystal clear sea and typically Mediterranean vegetation. The beach is almost untouched, located in an enchanting cove between pebbles and stones and its seabed is perfect for snorkelling and diving. You can also admire the old stone warehouses, ancient storage places for fishing nets and boats. Punta Scario is one of the places on the island where you can experience an atmosphere of unexplored naturalness.
